What is a smart contract and how does it work?

A smart contract is a software algorithm that automatically executes predefined terms of a transaction. In simple terms, this is a digital agreement that independently performs specified actions when certain events occur. For example, if the buyer has confirmed receipt of the product, the system will automatically transfer the money to the seller.

The smart contract is based on a simple “if—then” principle. The parties determine the terms of the transaction in advance, after which they are fixed in the program code. This eliminates the need to manually confirm payments or monitor the fulfillment of each stage of the contract.

At the same time, a smart contract does not replace a legal agreement between the parties to the transaction. Its task is to automatically fulfill the already agreed conditions, reducing the number of manual operations, reducing the likelihood of errors and speeding up calculations.

In the case of the digital ruble in Russia, smart contracts become part of the new payment infrastructure. After placing a digital ruble on the platform, they cannot be changed unnoticeably, which ensures transparency in the fulfillment of conditions and increases trust between settlement participants.

 

Why does the digital ruble need smart contracts?

What is the digital ruble for in Russia? In addition to creating a new form of national currency, one of its tasks is to automate calculations, make them faster, safer and more transparent. Smart contracts help to realize these opportunities.

The potential of the technology is quite wide. In the future, smart contracts will be able to ensure secure settlements between participants in transactions, automatically fulfill the terms of contracts, and most importantly, control the targeted spending of funds.

By the way, such scenarios are already being tested jointly with the regions: the Bank of Russia is testing the use of technology in the provision of subsidies and other government support measures, as well as in the implementation of budgetary processes.

Today, basic functions are available: regular transfers according to a set schedule and one-time payments with a pre-set date and time of execution. According to the Bank of Russia, as of June 1, 2026, 37.4 thousand smart contracts were executed on the platform.

The next stage of development will be the platform of commercial smart contracts, the concept of which was presented by the Bank of Russia. It is assumed that banks and organizations will be able to create their own scenarios for automated payments in digital rubles. To do this, the platform is planned to be integrated with government information systems, while maintaining a high level of security.

According to Central University economists, the cumulative economic effect of the introduction of the digital ruble can reach 423 billion rubles per year. Experts call the development of services based on smart contracts, which will allow banks to offer new automated financial services to customers, one of the factors of this effect.

 

In what areas can smart contracts be used?

So far, the technology is developing within the framework of the digital ruble platform, but its scope of application is much wider than conventional money transfers. Smart contracts allow you to automate the execution of predefined conditions, so they can be used in a wide variety of financial scenarios.

  • Settlements between companies. Money can be automatically transferred to the supplier after the terms of the contract are fulfilled, for example, when the goods are delivered or the service is provided.
  • Logistics and supplies. The smart contract is able to independently initiate payment after confirmation of delivery, reducing the number of manual operations and reducing the risk of delays.
  • Real estate transactions. Settlement between the buyer and seller can occur automatically after registration of ownership, which makes the transaction safer for both parties.
  • Government payments. Smart contracts can be used to provide subsidies, social benefits, and other support measures, automatically verifying compliance with established conditions.
  • Targeted financing. The technology allows you to control the spending of budget funds, grants and subsidies, ensuring that the money is used only for its intended purpose.

As the platform for commercial smart contracts develops, this list will expand. In the future, banks and companies will be able to create their own automated settlement scenarios for various sectors of the economy.
